The Bodhisattva Vows

ACI 7

The Bodhisattva Vows

Asian Classics Institute is happy to announce our next level Teacher Training that will be held over two weekends: June 21-23 and July 12-14, 2024. Based on ACI 7, The Bodhisattva Vows, this Teacher Training will consist of a total of ten teachings, six meditations, and ten teaching workshops. The prerequisite is that you have completed any five ACI courses, including ACI 7 (homeworks, quizzes, meditations, final exam, and certificate) before you begin. Classes will be held from 6 a.m. to 9:15 a.m. Arizona time.

At the end of the Diamond Cutter sutra course—a deep investigation into the nature of reality—we asked a very important question:
If everything that we experience in the world is like a blank, empty screen and what we see on those empty screens is placed there by the way we have treated others—good or bad—in the past, then how are we to act from here on out? Because if things are empty, then it seems that we must be good and moral in our personal lives.
How do we know what are the best actions are for us to plant the best seeds? How does a Bodhisattva live, once we have this understanding?
In this Teacher Training course from the Asian Classics Institute, we will do an extensive exploration of the commitments that a bodhisattva makes both to living beings and to themselves, to create a more prosperous and healthy world. There are 64 of these commitments, oftentimes called vows, that help a bodhisattva plant the most powerful seeds in care of others. They are a recipe to bring about an impactful change in the world, as well as to bring each of us to higher states of spiritual evolution.
This course is based upon Master Asanga's root text and its commentary called The Highway for Bodhisattvas (Jangchub Shunglam) by Je Tsongkapa. Topics include: the definition and types of bodhichitta, types of morality and vows, how bodhisattva vows are taken, an explanation of the eighteen root bodhisattva vows and forty-six secondary bodhisattva vows, the four factors needed to break a bodhisattva root vow, how bodhisattva vows are lost, how to keep your bodhisattva vows well, how to restore your bodhisattva vows, and the benefits of keeping bodhisattva vows.
After the course, we will celebrate and take the bodhisattva vows together in a ceremony together.
ACI Teacher Training 7 then takes all this knowledge and helps you to learn all the necessary skills to teach it accurately, accessibly, and relevantly to your students. The training consists of a total of ten classes that are held over two weekends in June and July. In addition to the primary classes, we will host ten teaching workshops to hone your teaching and presentation skills. The prerequisite to join is that you have completed at least five ACI courses, including ACI 7 (homeworks, quizzes, meditations, final exam, and certificate) before you begin.
In addition to the theoretical and pedagogical presentations of this ACI course from certified ACI teachers, our training gives you the direct opportunity to practice teaching the material to your peers and a teacher training assistant. You will receive immediate feedback during these fun and interactive workshops to improve your mastery towards becoming a teacher. And as you develop proficiency in core teaching competencies – such as structure, language accessibility, and real-life applications – we will also spend a significant amount of time on how to analyze your students’ learning styles and how to engage them in ways that allow them to integrate the teachings quickly, effectively, and accurately into their lives. All of these together will help you become a better teacher, directly reaching your students’ hearts and inspiring them to have success in their lives and in their spiritual journeys.

Course organization and expectations:

In this 10-class series, which runs over two weekends, June 21-23, and July 12-14,2024, you will receive theoretical and pedagogical presentations shared by certified ACI teachers.
In addition to the primary classes, you will have ten (10) practical workshops to hone your teaching and presentation skills. As you practice during these workshops, you will receive immediate feedback from your peers and your teaching assistant (TA). This gives you on-the-spot analysis of your teaching style and skills, as well as tips on how to improve your mastery of becoming an ACI teacher.
The prerequisite for ACI TT 7 is to have completed at least five ACI courses, including homeworks, quizzes, meditations, final exam, and receipt of the ACI certificate. One of these courses must be ACI 7.
You are required to keep your camera on during class if you want to receive a certificate of completion. The reasons are multifold: to be a teacher, you need to be comfortable on camera and it also helps the teachers get to know you. You should clearly be attending the teachings and not be driving your car, or walking through a park etc. If there are special circumstances that prevent you from turning on your camera for a particular class, you need to request permission from the ACI organizers. Being a teacher requires a deep and dedicated commitment, and ACI only certifies those who demonstrate that commitment.
The teaching will not be available as a recorded course that you can take later. Students will be expected to attend all classes as they are broadcast live. If that is impossible due to extenuating circumstances, lease request prior permission from the ACI organizers. (People who were present for the classes will be allowed to view the recordings online.)

1) You must have completed five ACI courses, including ACI 7, The Bodhisattva Vows, with certificates.
