The Great Ideas of Buddhism
Part II
ACI 17, The Great Ideas of Buddhism, Part II, offers an opportunity to revisit and review some of the most important and transformational teachings in the Asian Classics Institute curriculum. This course serves as a comprehensive study guide for ACI 6 through 10, weaving together the essential concepts necessary for a deeply fulfilling journey on the ancient path of the bodhisattva—a potent practice based in ethics and compassion, used to forge a deeper insight into the true nature of reality.
Taken together, these five courses create a powerful framework for lasting personal growth.
Together, these five teachings offer a clear and complete framework for developing the kind of mind that sees the world with wisdom, lives with integrity, and acts with compassion. Whether you’re reviewing key ideas for the first time or solidifying your understanding before moving forward in your studies, this course provides a powerful formula for meaningful and lasting change.
-
The Diamond Cutter Sutra is based on the original text by Lord Buddha, with commentary by Choney Lama Drakpa Shedrup. It presents a roadmap for understanding and eventually experiencing the direct perception of emptiness—the turning point on the path to enlightenment. In this course, we learn to train ourselves in questioning our conditioned ways of thinking, and gain the tools necessary to start using everyday experiences as opportunities for advancement.
-
The Bodhisattva Vows draws from Master Asanga’s root text and Je Tsongkapa’s commentary Highway for Bodhisattvas. Outlining the eighteen root and forty-six secondary bodhisattva vows with precision and depth, this course is essential for those seeking to live a life of deep purpose and service to others. By staying mindful in our thoughts and considerate in our daily interactions, we start to learn how to view the world in a more objective light. We see that true power lies in clarity and integrity, even while navigating the most complex situations.
-
ACI 8 comes from The Treasure House of Higher Knowledge by Master Vasubandhu, and a commentary by the First Dalai Lama—an incredibly extensive and thoughtful journey through Death and the Realms of Existence. We examine the ways and places to take birth, types of beings, as well as the hell realms and Buddhist cosmology. Since our actions shape our experiences—not just in this life, but in the next as well—we learn to make more intentional choices and naturally begin to increase the value we put on our time, our relationships, and our rare opportunity to use this human life wisely.
-
The Ethical Life is based on The Vinaya Sutra by Master Gunaprabha and commentaries by Je Tsongkapa, as well as the renowned Diamond Way Master Ngulchu Dharma Bhadra. This course explains the purpose and structure of the 10 non-virtues—and why morality serves as the foundation of all spiritual advancement. When we refine our ethical understanding, we begin to build a trustworthy relationship with ourselves and the world around us, which can ultimately lead to enhanced wisdom and meditative focus.
-
A Guide to the Bodhisattva’s Way of Life, Part I covers the first chapters of Master Shantideva’s massively popular classical text, with an incredible commentary by Gyaltsab Je. This course is pure gold—from fighting negative emotions to purifying destructive habits and patterns, it shows us the way to prepare ourselves for a more fulfilling experience of our life, and gives us an arsenal of powerful practices to combat the ignorance and conditioning we all face in our daily interactions with the external.
